Zum Inhalt:

Thought experiments play an important part of both science and philosophy. In contemporary philosophy of science there is a debate concerning the role and epistemic status of thought experiments. In this talk I will give a brief overview of this debate, with special emphasis on the role of though experiments in physics. I will then argue for the claim that the reliability of thought experiments in modern physics is unfortunately rather small. Despite the fact that thought experiments are not completely useless, they can still play an important heuristic function and help us to clarify our theoretical ideas and hypotheses.
