Guest at the Institute
Short interviews with some of our guests
Shuai Zuo
Could you briefly introduce yourself?
I am Shuai. I come from China and my home university is Fudan University.
How long will you be visiting the Department of Philosophy in Graz?
I will stay at the Department for two years, from December 2022 to December 2024.
What exactly are you doing during your stay at the Department?
I'm studying Husserl's ethics, which I take to blaze a path between two traditionally opposing views: formalism and subjectivism. I investigate the thesis that the development of Husserl’s ethical theories over his philosophical career is comparable to the development of his views in theoretical philosophy. I thereby focus on his movement from static phenomenology to genetic phenomenology.
Why did you choose the Institute of Philosophy in Graz as the location for your research stay?
Back in China, I've read one of Sonja Rinofner's papers on Husserl, which was a big inspiration for me. Also, upon learning that the department in Graz has a phenomenology group, which gives serious attention to classical phenomenology, I was quite sure that my work could benefit from coming to the philosophy department in Graz (and it does indeed).
What do you particularly like about the Institute of Philosophy in Graz so far?
I have met many professional, kind and helpful people. I can feel their passion for philosophy. The best thing is that, staying at this department, I continually realize the direction I need to go in order to improve as a philosopher.
