Notes on using the library

Please use the online library catalog and proceed as follows:

  1. Call up the online library catalog on the Internet.

  2. Enter the author's surname and a word from the book title, if known, in the search line and click on "Search". You will receive a list of libraries in which the book you are looking for is available.

  3. Click on the relevant library, e.g. "Philosophie/GEWI": it is best to make a note of the shelf number; you can also see whether the book you are looking for has been borrowed or not. Borrowing by the staff of the Philosophy Department is an exception. Some members of the department do not borrow books from the department library online, but place a borrowing card in a card index box located in the periodicals room.

  4. Using the shelf number, the book in question can be retrieved from the shelf and taken to the library supervisor, who will help you to sign out the book. You can also take a book back to the reading room.

The Department of Philosophy library is mainly an open stack library, with a smaller part being a reference library and linked to the main library via IT. However, it is not possible to order books in advance as it is the case in the main library; books must be collected directly from the shelf. You will need a valid library card in order to borrow books.

Rare books, journals, encyclopedias, handbooks and literature from the semester reference collection are not available for borrowing.

Once you have taken the book you want from the shelf, take it to the library supervisor, who will check it out online using a barcode reader. In unikat under "My account" you can call up your loans, view the deadlines and renew items.

The loan period is 30 days, renewals can be made up to three times within the loan period by the users themselves in unikat under "My titles". The loan period is 2 months for diploma students, 6 months for doctoral students and 1 year for academic university staff.

Each borrower will receive a reminder email before the deadline expires.

If items are returned late, a fee must be paid to the Main Library.

Books borrowed from the Philosophy Department Library must be returned there. Books can also be returned outside opening hours in the book return area set up for this purpose. No ID is required to return books.

In exceptional cases, books can also be deposited in the library's return box.

Books do not have to be returned in person, but can also be returned by another person or by post. The borrower bears the risk. If books are shipped by mail the loan period needs to be taken into consideration.
